Generally speaking, pedagogy is the art and science of how something is taught and how students learn it. Specifically it is an instructional theory. Pedagogy includes how teaching occurs, the approach to teaching and learning, the way the content is delivered and what the students learn as a result of the process. Modern Pedagogy has been strongly influenced by the cognitivism of Piaget; the social- interactionist theories of Bruner and the social and cultural theories of Vygotsky. These theories have laid a foundation for pedagogy where sequential development of individual mental process. According Malcolm Knowles, andragogy is the art and science of adult learning. Andragogy in Greek means the man-leading where as pedagogy in Greek means child-leading. Assessment is carried out to see what children and young people know, understand and are able to do. Assessment is very important for tracking progress, planning next steps, reporting and involving parents, children and young people in learning.
