Silence is the headline for the author’s novel. It echoes a common line heard in hospitals and other spaces of control. In the story, that line is imposed on the main character, Pretty: if she outbursts, she will be called an impostor. Silence becomes her rule from childhood to death, and from it splinter questions of identity, patriarchy, male dominance, gender bias, psychoanalytic feminism, bildungsroman, repression, and sexual politics.
